An Experimental study on Pregnant Anemia of the Rabbit.

Abstract
An experimental comparative study on hematological alterations and iron metabolism using Fe59 for
fourteen pregnant and twelve non-pregnant rabbits was conducted and the results obtained are as follows:
1. In the majority of the cases, the pregnant rabbits show decreased values of erythrocyte count,
hemoglobin and hematocrit compared with those of the nonpregnant cases.
2. A markedly decreased serum iron value in the pregnant rabbits is observed.
3. In spite of decreased serum iron, unsaturated iron binding capacity in the pregnant rabbits is increased.
4. In the iron loading test using Fe59, plasma iron disappearance is shortened, and plasma iron turnover, red cell iron utilization level and red cell iron turnover rate are increased.
Therefore it is to be concluded that pregnancy causes a tendency of iron deficiency anemia in the blood rather than so-called physiologic pseudo-anemia caused by increased plasma volume during pregnancy.
